My Hockey

My kids aren’t the only ones that get to have fun on the ice, I also play ice hockey on a women’s team.  This is my 3rd season with a team of awesome ladies and we play for WHAM (Fun fact:  The Women’s Hockey Association of Minnesota is the largest women’s hockey only league in the World!).  I did not grow up playing and started in my 40’s with some girlfriends doing an into to hockey class.  What looked like a midlife crisis in the in making actually turned into a fun hobby.

The unfortunate part of playing adult hockey and having 3 kids that also play makes my hockey schedule last in the pecking order.  This year, I played more as a sub and jumped in when I had the opportunity (which was almost never).  I was finally able to hit the ice a couple time in the past week after not lacing up the skates since October.  It was fantastic and I was reminded how much I love playing.  I didn’t realize I missed it so much!

A Few Thoughts…

  1.  I am WICKED out of shape!  The huffing, the puffing, and the sweating…and that was just putting my gear on.  The skating is no joke!  It looks easy but it is some “gargle your heart” cardio.  I just about cried when I played a game with only 9 skaters.  The every other shift business just about killed me.
  2. I look like a big red Grimace in my hockey gear.  GAH!  Hockey gear is not supposed to be slimming but I still don’t want to look like a house.
  3. I am not as fast as I think I am.  I was catching wind and my jersey was fluttering as I glided on the ice.  I felt pretty speedy!  My daughter captured a few videos of me skating and I thought they were in slow motion.  Nope.  Just my normal skating.  It is a humbling sport.
  4. Getting a goal is one of the best feelings ever!  I don’t get goals often, but when I do, I so wish I could do the celly on one knee like the pros!  I don’t do it because I would not be able to get back up.IMG_5382.jpg

The regular season is coming to a close just as I am able to start playing.  Go figure.  Thankfully, there will be a spring league where I can get in a few games!
